Pigeon spikes are one of the most widely used and most effective physical deterrents for preventing pigeons from landing and roosting on building ledges and surfaces. They do not harm the birds — they simply make the surface impossible to land on comfortably, causing pigeons to seek alternative perching sites.
Modern spike systems consist of a series of thin, flexible stainless steel or polycarbonate tines mounted on a base strip, which is glued, screwed or clamped to the surface. The tines are angled upward and outward in different directions, making it physically impossible for a pigeon to land without being poked. The system causes no injury — birds simply fly away and look for a more comfortable surface.
For spikes to be fully effective, every potential landing surface must be treated — including ledges, window sills, balcony railings, roof ridges, gutters, signs and any horizontal surface where pigeons have been observed. Leaving even a short section untreated gives pigeons an alternative that can limit the overall effectiveness.
Types of Pigeon Spikes We Install
Stainless Steel Spikes
The most durable option, with an expected lifespan of 10–15 years or more. Stainless steel does not rust, corrode or discolour. Available in 1-row, 2-row, 3-row, 4-row, 5-row and 6-row configurations to cover surfaces of different widths.
- Best for permanent installations
- Maximum durability in all weather conditions
- Can be installed on stone, concrete, metal and timber
Polycarbonate (Plastic) Spikes
Slightly more discreet in appearance than steel spikes, as the clear or white tines blend with the surface more readily. UV-stabilised polycarbonate does not fade or become brittle over time. Lighter weight makes them suitable for delicate surfaces.
- Good option for heritage or listed buildings
- Very discreet at a distance
- Lifespan 7–10 years
Where Pigeon Spikes Work Best
Spikes are ideal for linear surfaces with a defined edge. They are the go-to solution for:
For large open areas such as balconies, courtyards and roof sections where pigeons actually nest (rather than just perch), pigeon netting may be more appropriate. We will advise you on the best solution during a free site survey.
