Rats in French-speaking Switzerland: What You Need to Know

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is the most common rat species encountered in Switzerland, thriving in urban and peri-urban environments. It is an intelligent, adaptable animal that has coexisted with humans for centuries, exploiting our infrastructure, food stores and waste management systems. Rats can enter buildings through openings as small as 20 mm — the size of a 2-franc coin — and can swim through sewer systems, climb rough walls and gnaw through plastic, soft metals and wood.

A rat infestation is a serious matter. Rats carry leptospirosis (Weil's disease), salmonella, hantavirus and a range of other pathogens. Their constant gnawing on cables is a recognised cause of electrical fires. Their burrowing undermines foundations. A pair of brown rats can produce 40–50 pups per year under favourable conditions, meaning a small problem becomes a large colony with alarming speed.

Signs of a Rat Infestation

Droppings

Dark brown, spindle-shaped droppings, 1–2 cm long, along walls, behind appliances and in food storage areas.

Gnaw marks

Rough gnaw marks on food packaging, cables, pipes and structural elements. Rats must gnaw constantly to keep their incisors in check.

Grease marks (rub marks)

Dark smear marks along regular runways, especially where rats squeeze through gaps in walls or around pipes.

Burrows

Tunnels with smooth, compacted soil in garden borders, under paving, around compost heaps or near foundations.

Noise

Scratching, scurrying or gnawing noises in walls, under floors or in ceiling spaces, typically at night.

Sightings

Live or dead rats — usually at dusk or dawn. Daytime sightings can indicate a large or well-established infestation.

Our Rat Control Approach

Thorough Inspection

We begin with a systematic inspection of the property and its surroundings — inside and outside. We identify entry points, nesting areas, runways and food sources. Understanding the full extent of the infestation and how it is sustained is essential for an effective response.

Targeted Treatment

We deploy tamper-resistant bait stations containing Swiss-approved rodenticide in the most effective locations along established runways and near nesting sites. Placement is critical — rats are neophobic (fearful of new objects) and ineffective station placement dramatically reduces uptake. We return to inspect and replenish stations as required.

Proofing & Prevention

Eliminating the current population without addressing entry points guarantees a recurrence. We identify and block access points using rodent-proof materials, and advise on environmental modifications — waste management, removal of food sources, pruning of vegetation near buildings — that reduce the risk of reinfestation.

Rat Control for Businesses & Restaurants

For food businesses, restaurants, hotels and any premises subject to hygiene inspections, a rat infestation is a critical issue that must be resolved immediately. We provide rapid-response commercial rat control with full documentation and compliance reports suitable for cantonal health authority inspections.

We also offer maintenance contracts with scheduled monitoring visits to prevent infestations developing and to meet your ongoing hygiene obligations.
